SAT I Preparation

The new SAT I, which will be administered for the first time in March 2005, is an integration of the current SAT I with the current SAT II Writing and Math IC. It’s designed to place greater emphasis on actual skill development.

Our main objective is to help students become more intelligent test-takers.

What does this mean?

Students will learn to become more thorough and logical thinkers.

Students will learn the most effective approach to each type of SAT question.

Students will learn enhanced academic skills which go beyond the SAT itself.

SAT I: Math

The Math program has two primary objectives. First, we help students become more intelligent test takers, and more thorough in their thought process. The SAT is tricky, and the test-makers do a good job of anticipating common student mistakes. We offer students multiple-approach problem solving techniques in an effort to help them answer more questions correctly and efficiently, without falling into false assumptions. However, SAT Math is not all about techniques and strategies.

Students must review the key arithmetic, algebra, and geometry concepts which are most common on the test. We have designed an extensive set of materials to give students the necessary practice. In addition, all of our materials are organized by level of difficulty, so that we can better accommodate the needs of all students.

SAT I: Verbal

The Verbal program focuses on two primary goals: efficiency and skill improvement. To that end, we emphasize how to navigate the test with more acumen, alertness, and confidence — how not to get bogged down in all of the complexities and traps the Testing Service injects into the process. At the same time, we strive to improve the skills necessary to success. Since Critical Reading comprises the majority of the test, we spend a great deal of time sharpening the students’ ability to move through the dreaded reading passages with greater speed and comprehension. Constant practice sets and quizzes reinforce the new tools we offer, and help the students to integrate the skills and techniques on a more instinctive level. Extensive group work allows for mutual support and cooperation.

The Writing portion of the program is designed to help students improve their grasp of grammar and become better writers. The first part of the course focuses on reviewing important grammatical concepts, refining students’ ability to identify errors, and teaching them to differentiate between weak and effective prose. The second part of the course integrates these elements into a writing workshop. Students will compose several essays under test conditions. These pieces will be commented by fellow students, and then formally critiqued and graded by the instructor.
